When I first heard this song I must confess I didn't quite liked it. Just like
Christina Aguilera's
Hurt I found it a bit too dramatic. And then I've downloaded it and started to listen to it a bit more, and it turns out that
Listen, among with
Hurt, is a powerful, catchy ballad. Apart from
Beyoncé's fantastic vocal skills, the song comes with an out of rate instrumental and strong lyrics. Now, I'm not the only one to like it, after all, the song has been nominated for various awards like the International Press Academy Satellite Award, the Black Reel Awards, the Satellite Awards or most importantly the Golden Globe Awards and recently the Academy Awards, all in the Best Original Song - Motion Picture category for the
Dreamgirls motion picture. To date it has won the Best Song, Original or Adapted- Motion Picture at the Black Reel Awards. It's a serious candidate for the Oscar, although it lost in the Golden Globes to
Prince's
Song of the Heart from the
Happy Feet movie. There are two videos for the song, the first one directed by
Diane Martel features
Beyoncé performing on stage, and the second one directed by
Matthew Rolston and especially produced for
VH1 features the singer-songwriter performing the song against a black and white background.
Listen was released on the United States in early December, and will be released in late February on the United Kingdom and across Europe. Enjoy!
